Antarmahal - The view of the inner chamber

Let me tell you before hand that I am not a bengali. I watched the movie on DVD with wubtitles. But, I have inclination towards linguistics and literature, which made me undersatnd bengali and bengali culture.

Story line: I had heard about the movie that it is a pornography. Although I didn' watch the movie with any predujice and I didn't find it a pornogarphy, but a testament of British-Jameendaari age. A typical mid-age India's story of the time when British were The Gods of every Indian's fate. It also describes the poor state of women at that time. Though I don't say it is a family movie or any mainstream cinema, but it is one of the harsh reality about our history.

Their is am ambitious Jameendaar who unfortunately doesn't have any child. He has only two wishes one to become Rai Bahadur and another one is to be father of a male child. He is ready to anything for these two. He has two wives to complete his second wish and for the first one he plans to get the face of British Queen to Goddess Durga idol. One more story goes in parallel between the two wives, mixed with a natural hatred feeling blend with feminity.

Here are the bad practises/traditions which are shown in the movie:

a. Polygamy:
b. Exploitation of the people in the name of religion by brahmins
c. Strict castism
d. Treating women as a commodity
e. Praising the britishers upto the extent of worship

The story has no twists as such but series of incidents which make the story interesting.

Cast Performance: Soha ali khan has looked georgious in whole movie. She has acted as the second wife of Jameendaar (Jackie Shraff); who is quite sophisticated and emotional. Jackie Shraff's character is strong but couldn't get it's expected height due to many reasons. The formost reason was that his voice was dubbed. Rupa Ganguly has acted pretty well. She has lived her character of first wife of Jackie Shraff. Abhishek Bachchan has played character of scluptor, who is asked to make to new idol. He does not have much part to play and has done a decent job. Riya Sen acts as Abhishek's wife in guest appearence.

Summary: Film's strength is it's story line which is quite different from a normal movie. It is not a must watch, but movie with a different taste.
